APPE Rotations

It's practically that time for P3 students to be finalizing their APPE rotations!

As terrifying as it is, I am finding it rewarding to read through these and plan out what I might be doing next year. A year of hands on learning sounds like we are finally really getting out there to test what we have learned these last three years.

Where are you looking at going?

Anyone thinking about the out of state options like Alaska?

Or specialty electives like compounding or the FDA?

P4s or pharmacists, do you recommend any that you have experienced? Did any surprise you at how much you enjoyed it?

I'm hoping to do Critical Care as an elective. I also think Alaska would be so interesting - but I haven't made up my mind yet! The ND State Prison would be a unique experience you wouldn't get elsewhere either. There are tons of opportunities!

It is definitely hard to believe that our year of rotations is coming up so quickly! I, too, have found it to be very exciting and rewarding to look through all of the available rotations and begin to plan where I want to be next year. The rotation I am really hoping for is the Guatemala medical mission. I went on my first medical mission last spring and discovered that it is a true passion of mine! I am also hoping to do an Emergency Medicine rotation as an elective since it is one of the main areas I am very interested in. Our year of rotations will be filled with lots of learning, and I know that each and every one of us will be very successful!

The medical mission sounds right up your alley!

I was initially thinking Alaska would sound fun, but more and more I am leaning toward Hawaii as my "fun" rotation. If I do it rotation 1, I can leave a week or two early and call it a vacation!

I'm having a hard time deciding what city I want to be located around though, Fargo or my hometown of Bismarck - mostly since I don't know where I want to practice in the end.

If you're interested in residency - plan on doing some acute care rotations early in your year.  This will better prepare you for interviews.  You might as well go into rotations head first!

Definitely challenge yourself and get varied experiences.
